Carleton-sur-Mer, August 6, 2021 – Following the announcement about the gradual return to service of VIA Rail’s Halifax-Montréal line, The Ocean, the Régie intermunicipale de transport Gaspésie – Îles-de-la-Madeleine is happy to declare that the shuttle linking the Campbellton train station and municipalities on the south side of the peninsula, between Nouvelle and the City of Gaspé, will gradually resume for the period from August 11 to September 30, 2021. This supplementary service will enable Ocean passengers to or from Montréal to make the trip all the way to the City of Gaspé.
Even though, for now, VIA Rail is offering only one round-trip per week, the Régie felt it was important to be involved to make it easier for people to get from Point A to Point in the region. Synchronized with the train schedule, the shuttles will enhance the slate of services for locals, but also for the many tourists who visit the region during this period.
“The goal is to smooth the return of the link with the major centres, but also to make movement within the region easier. Passengers can choose lines such as Montréal-New Carlisle or Percé-Bonaventure on the VIA Rail website,” said Marie-Andrée Pichette, Régie intermunicipale de transport Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine’s Executive Director.
“We’re happy about the return of the Halifax-Montréal line as of August 11, despite it being progressive, and we believe that the shuttle service will make it easier for locals and tourists to get around. The service, albeit temporary, will offer passengers a worthwhile transit alternative for long or short distances. We hope that VIA Rail will quickly go back to its former service offering and that, in the end, Gaspésie will be served when the rails are repaired,” Daniel Côté, RÉGIM President and Mayor of the City of Gaspé, explained.
Starting Friday, August 6, 2021, passengers who want to use this service can reserve a spot and buy train tickets directly at the VIA Rail website at www.viarail.ca/eng. Travellers can also call 1-888-VIA RAIL (1-888-842-7245) or 1-800-268-9503 (teletype for people with hearing impairments) to talk with a representative. Information about the service is also available from RÉGIM at 1-877-521-0841.
